XX Workshop Grudis: The Use of AI in Accounting Research
The XX Grudis Workshop, held on the 2nd of December, focused on the topic of the ‘The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Accounting Research’.
The event brought together our community to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on accounting research. Sixty-five participants attended the event.
Moderated by João Pedro Oliveira (University of Porto), the event was opened by Sofia Lourenço (ISEG, University of Lisbon) in representation of Grudis Network’s Executive. The Workshop comprised a panel of three outstanding speakers:
- Cameron Truong, Monash University;
- Erik Straub, Witten/Herdecke University, and;
- Ricardo Malageño, University of Essex.
The speakers shared their expertise, discussing how AI is revolutionising research, highlighting its role in supporting the preparation, conduct, and analysis of research. A key point of focus was the potential for AI to create biases and other distortions in data analyses and interpretation, as well as in the production of reports. The speakers also emphasised how advanced language models may be used to enhance the design and application of survey instruments in organisational settings, making them more effective and better tailored to the needs of organisations.
Following the three presentations, an engaging discussion followed in an interactive environment, facilitated by the moderator.
Sónia Nogueira (Bragança Polytechnic University), who oversees the Workshops portfolio in the Grudis Network Executive, closed the session emphasising the presentations’ relevance and importance of AI for the future of accounting research. The XX Grudis Workshop provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and reflection on AI's growing role in academia.
